This project was an ambitious collaborative undertaking with Winnie Wang, Isobel Farquharson, Sasha Agakova, Ruby Murphy and Carmen Whaley, to create a respectful and adaptive costume for a reimagining of the Indian folk tale "The Son of Seven Mothers". We were supervised and instructed by textile artist Priya Velusami and costume designer Gabriella Slade throughout the process.
I took on the roles of Head of Pattern Cutting and Dresser for the project, where my responsibilities included researching authentic Indian dressmaking and cutting techniques to ground the making process in original practices in accordance with the designers' preferences, and then drafting appropriate patterns from this research. In addition to pattern cutting, I supported the designers in their design research, in carrying out embellishments and in constructing the different aspects of the costume. I primarily constructed the skirt and blouse, adding in the base trims before handing them over for further embellishing.
On the day of the performance, I acted as Dresser and Costume Assistant, monitoring and adjusting the costume and ensuring the performer's wellbeing.
This project formed the final submission of my first year of my BA Costume for Theatre and Screen studies at Wimbledon College of Arts. It was kindly modelled by Isobel Farquharson.
